Before diving into details you should know that Rio inhabitants don’t practice segregation, thus you will find easily mixed groups of straight and gay people.

The general atmosphere reminds of the 60’s and the decor is quite special. Its a kitsch decor featuring elements from more design backgrounds. When you get near the location of the club look for the red curtains and the hostess behind the glass as you will find no flashy sign.
Inside you will find a dance floor and a party. The cute waiters will surely maintain your spirits high. The theme of the party may vary form night to night and there is one special night for the girls too.

If you are not satisfied with the Copa then you can choose from a multitude of other gay and lesbian bars. The places might be: La Cueva (a very respected settlement with over 30 years of existence), Le Boy, Blue Angel, Rainbow, Dama de Ferro, Star Club and others.
Le Boy is near Ipanema and it will give you nice go-go boys, drag shows, very much buzz and usually lots of fun. As with The Copa Le Boy also theme parties and special guests (like Gloria Gaynor).
A thing to remember of gay and lesbian life in Rio is the fact that here the accent is on having fun rather than discrimination.
