Welcome to praia Vermelha, the red beach
A beautiful beach, with steeply sloped sands, Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) conquers its tourists with its exotic, luxuriant and strange glamour.
Sorounded by coconut and bamboo trees, this place is just another charming oasis of peace and calm in Rio, blessed with cacti, orchids, bromeliads and grassy bushes.
The red beach lies close to the Morro da Urca, situatetd at 220 m altitude. From here you can reach Sugar Loaf by cable car. And to be honest, you shouldn’t miss it!
Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açucar) called like that for its shape, rises at 396m (1,300ft) above sea-level, offering you a breathtaking panorama of Rio’s majestic beauty, with built-up areas nestled between magnificent bays and dazzling beaches on one side and abruptly rising mountains from the water, on the other side, in Guanabara Bay.
Another interesting tour, departing from Vermelha beach, this time on water, is to Cotunduba Island. Though few people know about it, this place is a wonderland for kayaking and a perfect tour of the coastline.
Passionate surfers may also find Vermelha beach an interesting destination for its hollow and fast waves. Especially the left side of the beach, also called Saquinho is very welcoming for surfers, both beginners and professionals.
The wave is regional classic, heading both left and right, having a short length of approximately 50 m. In the good days it could reach as much as 150 m. Southern swells on the right side of the beach are very good, both for surfers and body boarders.
If you’re staying in Urca check out the Movimento Artistico da Praia Vermelha, a sidewalk music party that starts at 9pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
While on Praia Vermelha you’ll also have the chance to admire other interesting sites that have their history.
Among them:
Morro da Babilonia, Pedra do Urubu and Falesia don Acidos.
The trip to the Rio beach could be just another opportunity for a rock climbing session. Never tried it before? Do not worry! There are specialists to assist you on this program. What is obviously required is that you be in good shape.
Before you leave, if you wish to relax a bit and take with you the best views of Rio de Janeiro, pay a visit to the Circulo Militar on Praia Vermelha, a fancy club facing the Guanabara Bay. There are several appetizing dishes, among which the Bella Praia Pizza with octopus, shrimp and squid, or if you want a more consistent meal go for churrasco with chicken, beef and excellent sausage. If you happen to go there in the evening, you’ll admire the bay and Praia Vermelha in the lights of Niteroi far.
