Pay by weight Copacabana restaurants!

Pay by weight Copacabana restaurants is another option to eating out. For late dinners I usually like to go to traditional Brazilian places, order my food, wait for the meal to get done and then eat it!.

Maybe with a beer or a caipirinha while doing so. But for lunch it can be great to just get your food served right away, especially if you are eager to get back on the beach and don’t want to spend too much money on it !

The Brazilian lunch is called almoco in Portuguese. It also has it’s own verb “almocar” which means to lunch. Many Brazilians go to pay by weight Copacabana restaurants to “almocar”, which are very similar to buffets. There is a big table with all kinds of dishes on it where you just help yourself. You’ll see fries, the famous bean stu (feijao) which they use on everything, various salads, eggs, different meats of porc and chicken, rice, and so on. I think I have mentioned the most common ones.

Anyway, you can put what ever you like on your plate, and when you’re done you place your food on a weight by the counter and get a paper with the amount of money you owe.

Then you go to your table and a waiter goes around taking drinking orders which he adds on your paper. Finally when you are ready to leave, you take your paper to the caixa (cashier) pay the bill and go. Fast and effective! My Brazilian friend told me that Brazilians have a thing for queues. If they see a queue they will get in the line, even if they don’t know what it is. Funny enough, this seems to be right in some cases. My friend ended up doing Russian language at the university because of this.

You should, however, see that there are other people eating at the copacabana restaurants you choose, so you are sure that the food isn’t old. It’s usually best to eat around 12’ish which is the usually lunch hour. The food is most likely prepared to be done at the peak hour.
