What I personally like about the Savoy Othon Hotel is that it’s really close to Arpoador, a good surfing beach in Rio de Janeiro. Get up early ! Grab some of the tasty brasilian breakfast, jump in your bathing trunks and get your board ! The waves are good from 08.00 to about 11.00 when the tide turns. It gets better again in the afternoon about 1600-1700. 
Even if you don’t have a surfing board, there are many surf shops with cheap longboards (for beginners). I have ended up bringing two boards home to Norway.
