Welcome to Joatinga or Praia do Joa as the Locals Love to Call It!
Joatinga, Praia do Joa or Moro do Joa, these are the words on the lips of every Carioca, when it comes to relaxation, silence and piece of mind.
A remote spot, far away in the wilderness, Joa beach is one of the most exotic and fascinating places in Rio. An isolated 220 m strip of white sand accompanying one of the richest and most luxurious natural reservations in Rio, Joatinga is situated on the southern coast of the city.
This rare ecosystem of Atlantic Rainforest, mangroves and rastinga (beach vegetation) is a precious hidden oasis that travelers shouldn’t miss. This is also the place were a small community of Caiçara lives.
The term Caiçara describes the culture of artisan fishermen or agriculturists of mixed African, European and Native South American descent. This place is worth visiting both for its rich history, wild vegetation and serene atmosphere that bring tranquility to your soul.
Simply dial 2434 – 0553, spend some 16 R$ for a cab ride departing from Ipanema or Copacabana and you’ll reach Joatinga in its utmost splendor.
Situated in a shallow region, in the vicinity of the mountains, Joatinga and Mamangua offer unique itineraries across the dense and tropical Atlantic forest crossed by virgin beaches.
Not far from here, lies Prainha, the Small Beach according to its name, surely the best surfing location in Rio de Janeiro, especially when the south winds blow.
The waters are welcoming both professionals and beginners here, at Prainha, where the waves are fast, powerful and hollow. The maximum swell size is around 3m, heading South, SE or E when the winds blow from South. If you wish to come to Prainha and stay here for longer to enjoy the waves, you may opt to get shelter at local houses or you can rely on camping and cottages at Guarda do Embau.
Although neither Joa beach nor Prainha are not as fashionable and topped up with expensive bars and clubs as the central resorts of the city may be, they are truly appreciated by both locals and travelers as they represent a wonderland for surfers.
So make sure you don’t miss out a one day trip to Joa beach to catch a glimpse of the tropical peace and especially if you wish to surf the wild waves at Prainha.
