Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is little but has gone by many names from old times; Uruçumirim Beach (Indian name), Sapateiros´(Shoe man beach), Carioca Beach, Marinheiros beach, and Sapocaitoba beach. Flamengo beach is a small ‘praia’ (beach in Portuguese) which is good for practicing sports and relaxing.
Flamengo beach used to be a place where ships used come and get water. Only in the 19th century, Flamengo turned out to be a place designed for people with good life conditions. With the opening of the main Avenue, in 1905, linking downtown to Flamengo, the beach began to look like how it is nowadays, see pictures bellow.
Flamengo also has one of the most popular football clubs in Rio de Janeiro. When they play at Maracana, you can experience the flamengos, cheering their team into victory with flags and drums.
In 1964 the Flamengo beach region was given Aterro do Flamengo. Today Flamengo is mainly a residential área with more than 60 thousand inhabitants. Aterro do Flamengo The Aterro do Flamengo is one of the most important areas of entertainment and tourist attractions of the city. It has high speed ways responsible for the good order of the traffic of transportation among Downtown and South Zone of Rio.
Aterro do Flamengo has 1.2 km2 and it was opened in 1964 and protected by the historical patrimony in 1965. Inside Aterro do Flamengo there is an area called Parque do Flamengo (Flamengo´s Park). It has a great variety of trees and it’s a big area with soccer fields, tennis courts , basketball courts , bike way, “children’s city”, suspended gardens , barbecue house and even the Beach.
On Sundays the streets were the cars are driven are closed and the area plus the streets turn out to be a big entertainment area, where people of all ages have fun!
