It's a brick of a Brazil guide, loaded with detailed information from most all travel worthy destinations in Brazil. The only critisism I have had with the book, is that it could use some more illustrations, travel destination pictures.
Lonely Planet is world known for it's detailed travel guide. Accomodations and tourist attractions are easy to find, and it also has several possible routes for you to plan where to go. You can choose to buy a more detailed travelers guide of Rio de Janeiro, or the general Brazil guide, which still is very detailed about Rio de Janeiro. For those looking to practise your communication skills, the Brazilian-Portuguese is the way to go. You are able to learn the basics of portuguese in 3 months if you study and practise. The brazilians are very eager to talk to foreigners, but unfortunatly, not everyone speaks english in Brazil. You will also get allot more out of your stay with some basic portuguese under your skin.
