Arpoador beach
Located between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Arpoador has excellent wave formation and a good spot to try some surfing. So close to the city makes it crowded though

Prainha beach
Paradise exsists at Prainha beach (the little beach in english), covered with jungle and a myrrad of green landscape remote from Rio. This is the best beach for surfing in the south american carnival capitol.

Ipanema beach
Famous for the song Garota de Ipanema (girl from ipanema),Ipanema offers possibilities for surfing, and body boarding. Not as good as arpoador but better than Copacabana. Ipanema is also cleaner, and you have the beautiful view of the mountains surrounding the city.

Copacabana beach resort
The beach itself in the south zone of the ciy is a wide strech of 4 km usually calm and not the best place to do wave surfing. All though some times, with high waves, the area around the Copacabana fort is dooable.

Barra da Tijuca
This is an excellent place to surf. Although a bit outside of Rio, this 12 km strip of beach usually has space and the waves for both beginners and intermediate surfers. A good place to start for those who doesn't want to run over other surfers. Also popular for kite surfing.
