Chopperias and Cervejarias, houses of beer, Copacabana !

Chopperias and Cervejarias are some of the great pleasures in tropical brazil. Cariocas and Brazilians like beers so much they have made these “houses of beer!”

They’re basically little bars, or “barzinhos” where you can sit with friends, eat small dishes and have a refreshing ice cold beer in the tropical weather, “uma cerveja bem gelada” in portuguese.

So what about Chopperias and cervejarias? Are they basically the same thing? Yes, the difference in name just indicates ways of serving the beers. A “chopp” is simply beer served in a glass. If you want a bottle, ask for “uma cerveja” or “uma garrafa”, hence the name cervejaria.

Usually Brazilians buy bottles of beers, put one glass for each person on the table which they fill up. If the bottle runs empty they buy another round. If you run into some Brazilians and want to invite them for some beers, you say “Vamos tomar umas?” which means something like “Lets get some beers!” in a slang kind of way.

Brazilian culture often revolves around sharing. In addition to buying rounds of beer for the group, (instead of buying one beer each) the small dishes in the bars are often placed on one plate, then everyone in the group uses tooth picks to eat small pieces of barbeque meat, sausages, chicken and so on, together. Now that is social, I say.

Sometimes the beers are served in plastic containers to keep the “cerveijas” cold. I think it’s a sensational invention, especially if you are in the sun or the warm tropical weather of Brazil. If you run out of beer, just take the empty bottle out of the plastic and a waiter will bring you a new one! That’s what I call service!

There are many Chopperias and Cervejarias on Copacabana, but one I always visit when I’m in Rio is the Emporio in Ipanema.

The Emporia Choperia is a small and very pleasant bar, popular both with Brazilians and foreigners. I remember the music is really good ( In my humble opinion) and during the evening and night it gets so crowded here that people start standing on the streets outside the bar. You can still bring beers with you, only you get a plastic cup instead of a glass if you are going outside.

Here you’ll meet many people which are easy to talk to. At least I did. Here is the address again. It’s in Ipanema, not far from the lagoa. (A big lake in the middle of Rio)
