Cachacarias, Samba and beers!
If you want to experience the famous Brazilian liquor, Cachaca, from Brazil then Cachacarias are probably a good place to begin.
These “houses of spirits” offers a taste of many variations and types of the 8000 brands of cachaca served. Of course the usual “chopps” (glasses of beer) and “garrafa” (beer bottles) can also be found here. Cachacarias are often good places to sit down before or after dinner to relax and enjoy the evening in good company. You can also usually order small dishes here which is shared on the table.
Brazilians like to frequent these places which often has a good atmosphere both amongst the guests and the overall setting.
In Rio de Janeiro there are several cachacarias. One I recommend lies near Arcos da Lapa and is called Cachaçaria Mangue Seco. The exact address is Rua do Lavradio, 23 (Lapa) 3852-1947 Rio de Janeiro _RJ.
This place has a great atmosphere with a program for live music and samba on the evenings.
If you’re in the mood for new things,
Tuesdays at 20h:
The Cachaçaria Mangue Seco can offer a show called “Nova Opinião” which mean “the new opinion” in English. The object of the entertainment is to show new compositions, new lyrics and new singers to the public. This is an excellent place to know new brazilian music and artists. The cover charge to enter is also cheaper on tuesdays, only R$6.00.
Friday is Samba day at 22h:
The musical group of Seresta carioca plays samba clasics.
Saturdays, 22h:
Live music with the “Chapeu de Palha” a good brazilian band.
Another little Cachacaria can be found in Leblon, near Ipanema called the Academia da Cachaca Leblon. The address is posted below.
ACADEMIA DA CACHAÇA LEBLON
Address: Rua Conde Bernadote, 26 - Loja G
Leblon - CEP: 22430-000
Tel.: (21) 2529-2680 e (21) 2239-1542
In this place you can do a Caipirinha course for R$20.00 and learn how to make brazil’s national drink, aswell as taste them.
Something to try are the cachaca infusions. Different kinds of spices are put in the bottle together with the spirit to give distinct tastes and aroma. Cinnamon is one example of a good infusion.
Other famous Brazilian variant is the Cravinho or Cachaca Cravo.
