Rio is basically split in three soccer teams, Botafogo, Flamingo and Vasco da Gama. Each club attracts supporters from different social societies and different local parts of the city.
The Botafogo football team has it’s base located in the city part of Rio de Janeiro with the same name. Botafogo and it’s football fans are mostly a modern middle-class and small commerce community, located between the hills of Mundo Novo, Santa Marta (separating from Laranjeiras) and Morro de São João from Copacabana
The home stadium of Botafogo soccer club is Caio Martins, capacity 12,000, but most games are played in the Maracana with a a capacity of 120,000. Its biggest rivals are from the same city: The Fluminense football club and the Flamengos.
Heated rivalry and many emotions are present at any game. The many supporters waves great banners and flags and fireworks are not uncommon.
Botafogo plays in vertical black-and-white stripes with black shorts and grey socks. The club symbol is the lone star, represented on it's badge. Botafogo means set-fire and it's also the name of the neighbourhood where the club has its origins.
